156th Victoria Highland Games and Celtic Festival Report
Terry Pea and his wife Yvonne as well as Bruce Crawford attended this game for the first time. It is quite a journey as one must go through customs and cross the Puget Sound by ferry to reach Vancouver Island and the provincial capitol of British Columbia. We were greeted by the game organizers and many individuals were glad that we had made the trip. This three-day event is held at Topaz Park in the center of Victoria and it is supported by the city and the province. Saturday night the flaming saltire ceremony was held on the lawn in front of the Parliament Building near the waterfront. Each clan introduced themselves and gave a short description of the clan and our motto. Here is a picture of Terry holding the torch for Clan Crawford.
The games are large with thousands of visitors coming each day. It seemed exotic as the pipe bands were from all over western Canada. Exotic band names like the Saskatoon Highlanders, etc. We had several Crawfords drop by the tent and handed out brochures about the CCA and about being tested as part of the Clan Crawford Y-DNA Project.
On Sunday night the clan representatives were invited to attend a whiskey tasting event at the Caledonian Distillery in Victoria. It was a good time to hob nob with other clans and to taste some single malt “whiskey” made in Canada. Another picture of Terry making sure the whiskey was not poisonous.
In conclusion, the Victoria Games were a fun event but required a block of five days to attend.
